Gippsland Symphony Orchestra was founded in 2015 in response to demand from local musicians to be able to play a high quality repertoire without travelling to the city.The group aims to provide non-professional community based musicians in Gippsland with Chamber and Symphonic Orchestral experience and performance opportunities, while also providing the local community with another source of accessible, high quality musical performances.
Originally based only in Warragul, an additional branch of the Orchestra was introduced in Bairnsdale during 2016. Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings in Warragul and on Sunday afternoons in Bairnsdale, with some combined rehearsals scheduled prior to each concert.
