Gippsland Symphony Orchestra was founded in 2015 in response to demand from local musicians to be able to play a high quality repertoire without travelling to the city.
The orchestra aims to provide non-professional community based musicians in Gippsland with chamber and symphonic orchestral experience and performance opportunities, while also providing the local community with another source of accessible, high quality musical performances.
Originally based only in Warragul, an additional branch of the Orchestra was introduced in Bairnsdale during 2016. Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings in Warragul and on Sunday afternoons in Bairnsdale, with some combined rehearsals scheduled prior to each concert.
Since its founding, the GSO has performed an extensive repertoire spanning the Baroque through to contemporary Australian works, including symphonies by Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky and Schubert, as well as concerto performances featuring local and guest soloists. The orchestra regularly presents concerts at the West Gippsland Arts Centre (WGAC) in Warragul and The Wedge in Sale, with additional performances at venues including the Regent Theatre in Yarram and the Berninneit Theatre on Phillip Island.
